Setting Up Google File Stream On Your Computer

Want the ease of accessing Google Drive right from Finder on your computer? Then install Google File Stream.  If you already have Google File Stream on your desktop (SSSD employees – it was pushed out by your admin), skip the first two sections of this post and start reading When Google File Stream is Already On Your Computer below.


Directions for Installing Google File Stream (SSSD employees – skip)

  • Go to google.drive.com and sign into your Google Drive account.
  • Click on the settings wheel on the right side of the screen and choose “Get Drive File Stream for Mac.”
  • Download the file.  A dmg file installs on your computer. Click on the file in your downloads folder. It will run.
  • Click on “Google Drive File Stream pkg.” Follow the directions by choosing “Continue.”
  • Next, run the installer. You’ll need to enter the admin password or have your admin do this step.

Additional Steps (SSSD employees – skip)

  • You may get an alert that mentions “Security & Privacy.” If so, click the button that takes you to Security & Privacy in the computer’s System Preferences. You can also do this by choosing “System Preferences” under the apple in the upper left hand corner of your computer.
  • Security & Privacy has a “General” tab. From that tab, look near the bottom and find “Allow loading system software from Google, Inc.” Choose “Allow.” Continue with the steps below.

When Google File Stream is Already On Your Computer (SSSD employees start here)

  • Open Finder in the dock
  • Google File Stream is in your computer’s applications folder. Click on it.

  • The Google Drive File Stream icon will appear at the top of your computer screen. 
  • Click on it and sign into your Google account.
  • Your Google files will begin to load. This may take some time.
  • You may get an alert that mentions “Security & Privacy.” If so, click the button that takes you to Security & Privacy in the computer’s System Preferences. You can also do this by choosing “System Preferences” under the apple in the upper left hand corner of your computer.
  • Security & Privacy has a “General” tab. From that tab, look near the bottom and find “Allow loading system software from Google, Inc.” Choose “Allow.” Continue with the steps below.

Once the Files are Uploaded

  • For easy access to your Google Files, click on Finder in the dock.
  • In the side bar under Locations you will see the word “Google.” Click on it.
  • Drag “My Drive” into the sidebar of Finder. You will now be able to quickly access the files in your Google Drive account right from the Finder of your computer.

One More Easy Step

To save yourself one click each time your want to access your Google Drive files, set up the Finder to go directly to your Google Drive files.

  • Open Finder on your computer.
  • Then click on Finder by the apple at the top left of the screen and choose Preferences. 
  • Change Finder Preferences in “General.” Near the bottom, is “New Finder window shows:” Click on the arrows to the right and select “Other.”
  • Then select “My Drive” so that every time you open the Finder, it will go to “My Drive.”

Congratulations! You can now access your Google Drive files right from your Finder.
